Welcome!

I am an associate professor of political science and the Director of Asian Studies at Clark University, a Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) Fellow at the National Committee on United States-China Relations (2021-2023) and a Wilson China Fellow (2022-2023). My research focuses on policing and security in reform era China and explores themes of local governance, state legitimacy, and authoritarian control. My new book, Policing China: Street-Level Cops in the Shadow of Protest, is out with Cornell University Press, and my academic articles have appeared in Comparative Politics, the Journal of Chinese Political Science, and the China Quarterly, among others. More digestible bits of my research have also appeared in The Economist, The Diplomat, and East Asia Forum.
